What is the Black Alumni Collective?

Because of the recent racial reckoning in the United States, the members of the inaugural BAC Leadership Team set out with the desire to impact the institutions of education and  support the racial justice and equality movement. s of education and support the racial justice and equality movement.

Furthermore, the BAC is committed to helping St. Andrew’s work with its Black constituents and beyond to foster and model reconciliation, ensure racial equity and equality, and enrich the experience of Black St. Andrew’s students and alumni through fellowship, advocacy, and mentorship

What is a Hackathon? 

Hackathons are multi-day events designed for ideation and presentation of innovative ideas related to a  theme. Hackathon themes are generally broad with well defined and narrower subthemes (tracks) that students join in order to collaboratively develop specific solutions. Hackathon solutions can be new or enhanced inventions, technologies, forms of communications, or an entrepreneurial activity.  

Hackathon themes possess the following qualities….

  1. Relevancy – The theme matters to those involved.
  2. Authenticity – The theme matters in the real world.
  3. Connectedness – The theme has connections to a broad array of sectors and disciplines.
  4. Support – Ability to recruit informed mentors and expert keynote speakers.

What is a social justice hackathon?

A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in solving the persistent issues, challenges and problems related to social justice for all people attend a hackathon to learn, build & share their uniquely creative solutions over the course of a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

This social justice hackathon advances understanding about a critical issue in BIPOC communities.

HACKBAC 2022 is a collaboration between the Black Alumni Collective, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the D! Lab, and The Center for Transformative Teaching & Learning – all based at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland.
